Like all of you, I’m trying to wrap my head around the latest updates and guidelines for coping with the coronavirus in our area. I’m fortunate to live in a rural town with a caring and resilient spirit and I trust that our community leaders will make good decisions for the good of the whole. My heart though is with my children and grandchildren who live in the city on the east side of the Rocky Mountains. It’s unnerving to think that any of us will be able to travel freely to visit for a while. We’re mindful of the necessary precautions and at the same time struggling with this reality and “media fatigue”. It’s a time for deep breaths, being present, and lots of prayer.
It’s also a time of heightened dreaming as the events of the waking world weigh heavy on our hearts and mind. It is in times of doubt and uncertainty (especially in the midst of misinformation and disinformation) that our dreams move into high gear illustrating our deepest fears and anxieties. Nighttime may bring strange dialogues, bizarre landscapes and unknown characters portraying chaos and confusion, eventually interrupting much needed rest and sleep.
I assure you that dreams are not to be feared but embraced for “all dreams come to us in the service of health and wholeness.” As dream teacher and mentor Jeremy Taylor said, “There is no such thing as a "bad dream". Only dreams that sometimes take a dramatically negative form in order to grab our attention”. All dreams come to show us something we don’t know or won’t acknowledge and offer creative solutions for personal or spiritual growth, healing and reconciliation.
Imagine that going to sleep each night is like attending the sneak preview of a movie in our own dream theater! Aspects of our life pertaining to specific issues are recorded on the dream film for a private showing. The heavy curtains concealing our unconscious are wide open revealing the past, the present and the future in metaphor and story commenting on our feelings of loss and worry. In partnership with our soul and the divine, all our fears, desires and memories are intricately woven in the story line of the script written. We are the lead actors and play all the supporting roles!
Would you be willing to consider that we have a choice about how the dream will impact us? We can choose to allow the nightmares and “bad” dreams to possess us, fueling more fear and guilt…or we can choose to see them differently and go deeper.
How can we see our dreams differently?
First, we begin with the acknowledgment that the key to unlocking the messages in the dreams is to learn the Language of Dreams – a symbolic language that speaks a truth that cannot be denied. Dream symbols, archetypal images, metaphor, mythology and scripture become the reference tools.
Second, we set an intention before we go to sleep that we want to remember our dreams, and that we are ready to receive the message in whatever form it takes without judgment or rejection.
Third, we begin a daily practice of recording whatever details of the dream we can recall in a journal. This will create a reference point where we can begin to recognize our personal symbols, recurring themes and characters and what they mean to us in the context of our personal history.
Fourth, we share. We speak the dream to see it differently. I invite you to share your dream(s) with a trusted friend or loved one who can offer you unbiased feedback.
And lastly, we can express our insights about the dream in creative ways to bring the dream images from the inner world to the waking world in a tangible form. Meditation, music, poetry, songwriting, dance, yoga, art, collage, sculpting, writing and journaling are tools we can use to enhance healing. In this way, we offer the dream as an invitation to raise our consciousness by shifting our perspective to see differently, ultimately bringing a richer and deeper understanding to the dream.
These are trying times and we must accept that there will be unusual challenges for a while. Our dreams can help us navigate this crazy world offering insights and guidance to survive and thrive in the outer world. Dreams truly are a blessing in disguise!
